What is the historical significance of the Roman Empire?

The Roman Empire became the first state to cover the entire Mediterranean basin. Roman possessions from the beginning of our era until 395 covered Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The Roman Empire became, along with Armenia, one of the first Christian states. The Romans gave the world roads, language – Latin, beautiful architecture and sculpture, they achieved great success in philosophy and oratory. Thanks to the Romans, their language spread to the territory of modern Romania.
