What is the horizontal ruler used for when formatting text?

The horizontal ruler has three sliders when formatting text. They can be moved with the mouse. The lower left slider sets the width of the left margin. The right slider sets the width of the margin on the right. The top-left slider sets the indent or protrusion of the red line relative to the left margin.
