What is the importance of hilling and picking for a cultivated plant?

Hilling (additional covering of the lower above-ground part of the stem or trunk of the plant with soil) and picking provide rapid growth and fruiting of the cultivated plant. When hilling, adventitious roots begin to form from the part of the stem covered with soil, and lateral roots develop on them. This enhances the surface soil nutrition of the plant.

Picking – pinching the top of the main root. This promotes the growth of lateral roots – the root system grows and nourishes the plant better.
