Mushrooms are food for many animals and insects. They are mainly eaten by squirrels, voles and other rodents. However, larger animals, such as moose, hares or wild boars, do not mind eating mushrooms. Even wolves and foxes eat them in times of famine. Mushrooms are also useful for plants. Many fungi enter into symbiosis (union) with plants and give them water in exchange for nutrients.
