What is the main difference between an operating system and an application?

An operating system is a special program that is responsible for the interaction between all application programs, peripherals and other devices in the system. Without an operating system, a computer cannot boot.

Application programs are responsible for performing some function. Examples of application programs – graphic or text editor, browser, etc. Application programs interact with the system (computer devices – hard disk, video card, etc.) only through the operating system. The computer may not have any application programs installed.
