What is the meaning of dividing society into varnas?
In India, there was a clear division of people into groups according to a certain type of activity, these groups were called varnas. The meaning of such a division was to exist harmoniously, helping each other, while developing spiritually. There were 4 such groups:
1. Brahmanas are mentors who knew moral principles well, could help with instructions and were distinguished by the ability to control themselves.
2. Kshatriyas – Very religious people, whose task was to rule the state (according to the instructions of the brahmanas) and lead the army in case of war.
3. Vaisyas were responsible for the maintenance of land, as well as were engaged in trade activities and cattle grazing.
4. Shudras – the working class that served the other three classes of society.
