What is the name of the community among the ancient Slavs?

Verv is a communal organization in Russia, characterized by certain land boundaries and mutual responsibility. This word is used in the “Russian Truth”, compiled under Yaroslav the Wise in the XI century. Under it there was meant a volost or district, the population of which is bound by circular obligations. Members of the Vervi were obliged to pay a fine (vira) for a murdered citizen found on their territory or the remains of a thief’s weapons.
