What is the planetary role of photoautotrophs?

Photoautotrophs (phototrophs) are organisms that are capable of synthesizing organic matter themselves. They need these substances as a source of energy. They can produce these substances under the influence of sunlight. These organisms include plants, some protozoa, marine phytoplankton, and others. They are essential for our planet as they produce oxygen. Terrestrial plants produce very little of this gas, but phytoplankton is the main source of oxygen.
