What is the purpose of the high wall around the settlement among the Eastern Slavs?

Without a doubt, the eastern Slavs built high walls around their settlements because these structures helped the population to defend themselves from predatory animals and from the raids of enemy troops (for example, nomads or hostile neighbors). The walls also showed the border of the settlement.
