Avar Kaganat – the Avar state, existed from 562 to 823 and occupied the territories of modern Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, parts of Germany, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia and part of Lithuania.
The state was founded by Kagan Bayan 1.
From the moment of its foundation Tengrianism, which is a pagan religion of all Turkic peoples, was professed in the Avar Kaganate. Tengri is the highest deity, it is also called the Great Sky. Another deity was Umai – the goddess of fertility and femininity. Under Tengrianism, fire was held in high esteem – with its help one could cleanse oneself of negativity. Since 805, Christianity has been adopted in the state.
