What is the role of metabolism in the life of living organisms?

Metabolism ensures the existence of all living things. It can be viewed as two separate but related processes – catabolism and anabolism. The first one is splitting, destruction of complex substances to simple ones. The second is the formation from simple elements of those complex substances that the body needs. With the help of these processes, absolutely all living organisms grow and multiply. Metabolic processes are especially active in small organisms, for example, birds. In the cells of one organism, metabolism also does not occur in the same way – rapid metabolism in young cells (for example, human bone marrow, epithelial cells).
