The intercellular substance is an amorphous thin film found between adjacent tissue cells, binding together its primary walls. In the cross-sections of coniferous wood, the intercellular substance appears in the form of a light network with thickenings in the corners of adjacent cells. Pectin substances, as a rule, predominate in composition in the intercellular substance; however, lignin predominates in woody tissues. As a result, due to dissolution in the intercellular substance, cells lose their connection with each other and dissociate.
