What is the role of the periosteum?

The surface of the entire bone, except for the heads, is covered with the periosteum, which includes connective tissue. It is permeated with blood vessels that nourish the bone and nerve endings; this structure ensures normal bone growth. The periosteum consists of two layers: the outer one is fibrous, the inner one is germ, which ensures the formation of new bone cells.
