What is the role of the receptor in the regulatory mechanism of the cell?

A receptor (translated from Latin – receiving) is a protein, the main function of which can be attributed to receiving a chemical signal outside the cell. We can say that a cell’s receptor is a “sense organ” with the help of which it is able to receive information and regulate activity.

Some cells, depending on the need, are able to change the number of receptors, thereby adjusting their “sensitivity” to external conditions.
