What is the role of the Senate in Athens?

The People’s Assembly acted as the Senate in Athens. Its members were citizens over the age of 20. The meeting performed the following functions:

Development and adoption of laws.
Consideration of issues of war and peace.
Appointed representatives to various positions, including military leaders.
Considered food supply issues.
Possessed judicial functions. When deciding on a matter of a serious criminal, an immediate conviction could be made.

Any citizen had the right to appeal to the People’s Assembly in order to resolve his issue.
