The signaling (receptor) function of proteins is manifested in their ability to serve as “signals” for starting a particular process. For example, the hormone insulin, released when the level of glucose in the blood rises, “allows” the cells of the body to absorb glucose, triggering a number of specific processes, and thereby lowering its level in the blood.
