What is the significance of photosynthesis for our planet?

Photosynthesis is an essential biochemical process that contributes to the development and maintenance of life on our planet. Photosynthesis provides autotrophy. That is, living organisms (mainly green plants) are able to independently synthesize glucose, which serves as a source of energy. Autotrophs are eaten by heterotrophs. Heterotrophs cannot create glucose themselves, so they eat plants and other heterotrophs. Also, photosynthesis is needed to maintain a constant composition of gases in the atmosphere.
