Blood performs a transport function. The main blood cells are erythrocytes. They, due to the presence of hemoglobin in their composition, are able to bind with oxygen and deliver it to various tissues and organs of the body through the blood vessels. Then they bind to carbon dioxide, which must be removed from the cells. The blood returns to the capillaries of the lungs where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygenated. Oxygen transport is the main function of blood. Another function of the blood is protective, since it contains leukocytes.
