What is vegetation layering?

Plants of the same height create a kind of floors – tiers. There are 5 tiers in total.
1. The first (upper) tier – oak, linden.
2. The second tier – maple, elm, mountain ash.
3. The third tier (undergrowth) – hazel, viburnum, wild rose.
4. The fourth tier – ferns, lungwort, lily of the valley.
5. The fifth (lower) tier – mosses, mushrooms, lichens.
