What kind of economy developed during the Middle Ages?

During the Middle Ages, subsistence farming prevailed. This means that most of the products were made only for their own consumption. Then in Europe there was a feudal system, which meant that the land was owned by large feudal lords. These lands were occupied by peasants who were forced to pay taxes to their masters. In Russia, such feudal relations took the form of serfdom, that is, the peasants became completely dependent on their landlords.
