What kind of snails are artificially raised for human consumption and why is chalk added to the leaves they are fed with?

The Grape snail (another name for the Burgundy snail) has been mentioned since ancient times. Pliny the Elder wrote about these snails, and about the creation of special farms for their breeding, to feed the poor population of people.

Today it is grown and eaten by gourmets from France, Italy and Spain.

Chalk is given to the snail as a top dressing to strengthen its shell, since its shell needs calcium.
