Its proximity to disintegration provoked a series of wars that became decisive in its existence. The Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 was a blow to both Russia and Turkey. It was supported by the Western European powers, which claimed the territory of the southern empire. England and Austria-Hungary sought to dismember the state in order to turn it into a colony.
