What liquid – oil (no. 1), oil (no. 2) or ether (no. 3) – should the vessel be completely filled in order for the pressure on its bottom to be the greatest?

The pressure of the liquid column is calculated by the formula P = ρ × g × h. Let’s consider all parts of this formula separately.

Suppose that we fill a vessel on Earth, being at approximately the same point. This means that throughout the experiment, the value of g – the gravitational constant – will not change noticeably.

Also, according to the condition, we fill the same vessel, each time pouring approximately the same volume of liquid into it. Therefore, the height h does not change either.

On this basis, only the density ρ will affect the pressure. Of all these liquids, oil has the greatest value.
