A cat’s eyes glow due to the presence of a special layer behind the retina called “tapetum lucidum”, which consists of guanine and pigments. This layer is designed to reflect the light directed at the cat’s eyes. Because of it, animals have excellent eyesight and see well in the dark. The reflective properties of the tapetum lucidum allow the animal’s eyes to receive more photons from the object they are looking at.
