What makes it impossible for too large cells to exist?

If the cell grows beyond a certain size, the materials will not be able to pass through the membrane fast enough to be placed inside the cell. Therefore, when a cell becomes too large, it will divide into smaller cells in order to maintain a surface area to volume ratio that is more favorable for the cell to function. Therefore, the cells remain small in order to survive.
