What means did the church use against heretics?

The Catholic Church called heretics people who doubted the church system, or at least some of its dogmas. And if in the early Middle Ages the death penalty for heresy was not provided, then starting from the 10th century they begin to kill heretics on a massive scale and brutally (mostly by burning them at the stake).
