What measures of punishment and encouragement were used in the Roman army?

The Roman army, for almost its entire history, was one of the most disciplined in the world. This circumstance was achieved by a system of measures of rewards and punishments.

Various awards were used as incentives: from monetary incentives to the semblance of modern medals.

However, there was also a cruel punishment: flogging with rods and a whip. The most severe punishment was decimation – the execution of every tenth person. This punishment was applied in the event of the flight of soldiers or any other shameful act.
