A heterogeneous (non-uniform) mixture is formed when the chemicals in the mixture are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture. For example, if you add sand to salt, no amount of grinding can turn the sand and salt into a homogeneous mixture such as salt and water. Thus, it can be said that a mixture of sand and salt will form a heterogeneous mixture.
