But by itself, it is not capable of carrying out gas exchange. It is regulated by the nervous system. The medulla oblongata is responsible for the respiratory process. Also, a musculoskeletal system is needed. The skeleton protects the respiratory organs and makes support, and the muscles allow you to change the pressure in the lungs and so to carry out gas exchange between the body and the environment. Also, many other systems are needed, since the body is a single whole.
