What part of the cell carries hereditary information?

A chromosome is a microscopic filamentous part of a cell that carries hereditary information in the form of genes. The defining feature of any chromosome is its compactness. For example, 46 chromosomes found in human cells have a total length of 200 nm. The compactness of chromosomes plays an important role in aiding the organization of genetic material during cell division and making it fit within structures such as the cell nucleus, which has an average diameter of 5 to 10 microns. Each eukaryotic species has a characteristic number of chromosomes.
