What people came up with chess and numbers that we call Arabic?

Although the numbers are Arabic, they originated from India. Arabic numerals are not like that. It is the Arabs’ merit that they brought them to Europe, where the inconvenient Latin was changed to Arabic (Indian). It’s a similar story with chess. Invented in India, called chaturanga. The rules were slightly different. The Arabs took the game for themselves and the rules became closer to modern ones, so did the name, shatranj. Chess came to Europe, passing to Spain.
