What peoples inhabited Byzantium during the Byzantine millennium?

The ruling elite of the Eastern Empire consisted mainly of Greeks. Before the Arab conquest, the Empire was also inhabited by Egyptians, Berbers, Italians, Illyrians, and Arameans. Later, the north of Byzantium was inhabited by Slavic peoples – Serbs and Bulgarians. An important role in the Byzantine Empire was played by the Anatolian peoples – Armenians, Kurds, Cappadocians, as well as the Crimean Goths – the German-speaking population of the Crimean peninsula.
