Patriarch Hermogenes immediately understood that it was necessary to save Russia. He was hostile and sent letters to different principalities and estates in order to gather the Russian army and defeat the invaders. Hermogenes refused to accept Catholicism and recognize the king. Because of this, his end was deplorable, he was starved and tortured.
