Amino acids are amphoteric compounds (they have the properties of both acids and bases). They can form both salts in combination with acids and alkalis. Intracomplex salts are formed with heavy metal ions (for example, copper complexes are used to detect amino acids). Example of a reaction:
H2N-CH2-COOH + HCl = [H3N + -CH2-COOH] CL-
H2N-CH2-COOH + NaOH = H2N-CH2-COO- Na + + H2O
