It is Roman law that is the progenitor of modern law, it was so humane and just. In the Roman court, quite controversial issues were resolved, those that could not be resolved peacefully. Praetors (judges) – made the final decision, and before that, both sides had the right to speak in their defense in the Senate. You could speak this speech yourself, or hire an orator (the most famous Roman orator-defender was Cicero), and if translated into our modern language – a lawyer.
