The empire of Charlemagne was located in Western Europe and covered the territories of modern France, Germany, Switzerland, Northern Italy, etc. The Byzantine Empire for the main part of its existence covered the Balkan Peninsula, partly Asia Minor, the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and part of northern Africa (Egypt and Libya). The Arab Caliphate was much larger and included the Arabian Peninsula, northern Africa, Iran, Afghanistan, part of Central Asia, Spain, part of Asia Minor, Transcaucasia, etc.
