What role did the church and its leaders play in the events of the 14th and first half of the 15th century?

This period was for Russia a time of struggle against the Golden Horde yoke, and at the same time there was a strengthening of the Moscow principality and the unification of other lands and principalities around it. We are talking about the rule of the Moscow princes, from Daniel (died in 1303) to Ivan III (ruled from 1462 to 1505).
