After defeat in the 1848 revolution, Italy was fragmented into the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Lombardo-Venetian region, the Roman state and small duchies – Modena, Parma, Tuscany and Lucca. For the development of the Italian lands, it was necessary to free themselves from Austrian rule. And after a series of wars between Italy and Austria, in 1861 the Italian Kingdom was formed, there was no Rome and Venice. Finally, in 1870, after the liberation of the northeastern lands from Austria, a single Italian State (Italy) was formed.
