What role did the Vikings play in the emergence of the two state centers of the Eastern Slavs?

There is a hypothesis that, perhaps, the statehood of Russia began from the moment the Slavs of the Varangians, Askold and Dir appeared on the lands. It was during the period of their reign that Kievan Rus became the state over which they ruled for 20 years, until the arrival of Prince Oleg of Novgorod. He lured and killed the Varangians by cunning. Thus, he seized power in Kiev and began to rule the newly created state. In addition, throughout the history of Russia, the Novgorod princes had frequent contact with the Varangians, since they were closest to them. They often called for help from the Varangians, as mercenaries, in resolving political issues.
