What role did Themistocles play in preparing for a new war with Persia?

The formation of Athens as a powerful naval power is associated with the name of this outstanding politician and no less prominent commander. Largely thanks to the activities of the naval party (naturally, unofficial, since the party system in Ancient Athens de jure did not exist), which was headed by Themistocles, the Athenian fleet was ready for the Persian invasion of 480 BC: the number of galleys increased from 70 to 20, the port of Piraeus was fortified, which predetermined the victory of the Greeks in the Battle of Salamis.
