What role did varnas play in the life of Indian society?

Varna represents the division of Indian society into estates. There were four of them, here is the list:
1. Brahman priests;
2. Kshatriya warriors and rulers;
3. Vaisyas – farmers and artisans;
4. Shudra-servants, workers.
Each varna had to behave accordingly. Each performed its own function. This speaks to the division of labor on which the viability of the state was based.
