What role do chromosomes play?

Chromosomes are structures located in the nucleus of a cell and made up of nucleic acids and proteins. Chromosomes play the role of storage, implementation and transmission of genetic information in the cell. Chromosomes are formations of DNA molecules that are stabilized by accessory proteins. Genes are linearly written in DNA molecules. Each type of living organism is characterized by its own set of chromosomes, called a karyotype. Chromosomes in a cell can only be seen under a microscope during cell division – mitosis or meiosis.
