What role does metabolism play in cell life?

Any cell of a living organism is its living component. For the normal functioning of such cells, as for any living system, nutrients and oxygen are needed, which it receives from the environment. But these nutrients are complex structures, therefore they must be converted (decomposed) by the cell’s enzymatic systems into simpler ones. When nutrients are used, some waste, carbon dioxide, remains, which the cell removes back into the environment.
