What role has the caste system played in Indian society?

It is known that in ancient India there was a specific division of the population into certain groups, which are called castes or varnas. There are 4 of them: the first is the brahmanas (they are scientists and priests); the second is the kshatriyas (representing the warriors); vaisya (people are workers); shurdras (servants or common laborers). We can say that the caste system played a key role, since it actually divided people into rich and poor.
