What social forces in France supported Bonaparte in his struggle for power?

After the collapse of the Jacobin dictatorship, the big bourgeoisie came to power. In an effort to keep this power from the dissatisfied people and the intensified noble reaction, realizing that the country needed a strong centralized government, the ruling bourgeoisie supported the popular General Napoleon Bonaparte, hoping that such an odious person would rise up to defend their interests by force of arms.

Bonaparte received support from the peasantry, who were promised protection of land ownership acquired during the revolution, from artisans who hoped to improve their situation.

The army and the police were also on the side of Napoleon, acquiring a privileged status along with his power.

After the conclusion of an agreement with the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Bonaparte gained the support of the clergy with the right to appoint all church officials and pay their salaries.
