What strata of the population supported the king’s power in the struggle for the unification of France?

The power of the king in this troubled time entirely relied on the poor strata of the population. The reason for this support was the domestic policy pursued by Louis XI.

After the end of the Hundred Years War, agriculture, trade, and crafts were restored very quickly. The connection between different regions of the country was maintained and strengthened. The people who were employed in these industries began to get rich and for this were grateful to the king.

Many large feudal lords did not support unification and were tarnished by cooperation with the occupants.

All this helped Louis XI to unite France by force of diplomacy and arms.
