What strata of the population supported the king’s power in the struggle for the unification of France? Explain why.

The power of the king in the difficult struggle against the aristocracy and for the unification of France was supported:

– the townspeople, since the king often took their side;

– the peasants, since the wars brought harm to their subsidiary farming;

– knights: small and medium feudal lords.

It was these strata of the population that became the main support for the unification and strengthening of royal power.

Also, the kings of France secured active support from the church. Bishops and abbots, who had an excellent education, were taken by the kings as advisers.
