| What substances are protein monomers? When proteins and carbohydrates are oxidized, the same amount of engheria is released. Why does the body only use proteins as a last resort as a source of energy?
Proteins are organic substances that make up any living cell. These are biopolymers, the monomers of which are amino acids.
The cell uses them as a source of energy in the last place because:
oxidation of carbohydrates is faster;
proteins perform more important functions – transport, structural, enzymatic, regulatory, signaling, contractile, protective.
Proteins are oxidized when they can no longer perform their function or when the supply of carbohydrates and fats is exhausted.
