What was common before Themistocles and Demosthenes?

What these historical figures had in common was that they both inspired the Greeks to fight against an external enemy. Both of them were convicted. Themistocles lived in the 5th century BC, when the Greco-Persian wars took place. Thanks to him, the Greeks were able to defeat the Persian fleet in the Battle of Salamis. Demosthenes was a member of the Greco-Macedonian wars, but still Macedonia was able to conquer Greece.
