What was the essence of the Munich agreements? Why did the Western countries prefer to conclude a treaty with Germany over cooperation with the Soviet Union?

The essence of the Munich agreements was the refusal of Western countries to fulfill their obligations to Czechoslovakia to protect it from the aggression of third countries. Instead, they preferred to give new guarantees to Czechoslovakia that when the Sudetenland was transferred to Germany, the borders of Czechoslovakia would no longer be revised.

A few months later, the West “forgot” about these guarantees, and Germany occupied Czechoslovakia completely. Such “forgetfulness” of the West was due to the fact that during the First World War, the goals set by the West were not fully achieved, since the USSR, which was not controlled by the West, was formed in the place of the Russian Empire.
